Katarina Horvat-Levaj graduated Art History and Archeology from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb (1981), where she obtained her master’s degree with the thesis Settlements and Towns. History and Theory of Urban Planning (1985), and defended her doctoral thesis under the title Representative Residential Baroque Architecture in Dubrovnik (1995). In 1988 she was awarded a scholarship at the University of Padua.

Since 1982 she has been employed at the Institute of Art History in Zagreb, presently as a senior research associate. Within the Scientific Research Programme of the Institute she worked on a number of themes related to architecture and urban planning of different art historical periods, especially the Baroque, most notably Istrian castles, historic center of Šibenik, baroque palaces in Dubrovnik and Boka Kotorska, fortified villa architecture in Dalmatia, baroque sacral architecture in continental Croatia. Her most comprehensive project was the study of Dubrovnik, particularly residential and sacral architecture – including certain urban quarters and complexes – and architects and constructors.

Besides scientific research, she has also participated in the preparation of conservation studies for revitialisation of settlements, as well as reconstruction and restoration of single architectural monuments, particularly ones in Dubrovnik damaged by the 1979 earthquake and the 1991-1992 Homeland War, and churches and castles of the continental Croatia.

She collaborated with various exhibition projects (Klovićevi Dvori Gallery, Dubrovnik Museums). She was the head of the research of the scientific research project Art Topography of Croatia and the editor of several books within the project (Križevci – City and Region, Ludbreg – Ludbreška Podravina). She is editor of the books from the series Studies and Monographs of the IAH (Academic Church of St. Catherine in Zagreb, The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin in Dubrovnik, The Collegiate Church of St Blaise in Dubrovnik) and editorial bord memeber of the journal Radovi Instituta za povijest umjetnosti (Journal of the Institute of Art History) (Journal of IAH) (2005 – 2015).

She participated at a number of Croatian and foreign conferences. As part of the international project Museum with no Frontiers. Discover Baroque Art she presented Croatian Baroque Architecture.

She teaches at graduate and doctoral studies at the Department of Art History, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Split (where she has been elected as associate professor); doctoral studies at the Faculty of Croatian Studies, University of Zagreb; and occasionally at the Department of Art History, University of Graz.
