  • WHY?

For the past several years, the expert technical support department (ETSD) of the Institute of Art History, responsible for providing scientific and expert infrastructural support to current projects, has been investigating the possibilities of applying new technologies in the processes of valorization, protection, and restoration of cultural heritage.

In parallel with the development of methodologies and tools in the field of digital art history, the Cultural Heritage Lab is a place where new technologies within digital humanities are studied and adapted to our needs while creating open platforms for a broader scientific community.

  • HOW?

In research and documentation of architectural heritage, we are applying new methods enabled by 3D laser scanning. The results of 3D laser scanning (point clouds) are compared to classical architectural surveys and archival plans in order to create new generation 3D models (hBIM).

While conducting conservation field research, we are examining and developing non-invasive methods using IC thermographic camera and ground-penetrating radar (GPR).

Following the studies of architectural compounds, urban complexes, and regions, the results of archival and field research are employed in the creation of relational databases, digital atlases, and digital maps (GIS).

Based on our research, we propose ideal reconstructions of historical layers.

We systematically digitize our analogue collections (Plans Library and Photoarchive) and integrate them with digital-born collections using a single platform for organizing and managing the documentation funds of the Institute. The platform is continually evolving, taking into account the specificities of the material and the needs for further use of a large number of data derived from that material.

  • THE FUTURE

By encouraging the cooperation of experts from various fields, local and international institutions, business entities and initiatives, our aim is to develop new technologies and educate experts in the field of research and presentation of cultural heritage through joint projects.

By launching new international projects in the field of digital humanities, we want to create new databases and open platforms for the benefit of broader socio-humanist community.
