Digital network, spatial and (con)textual analysis of artistic phenomena and heritage of the 20th century

About the project
The DIGitART project is aimed at creating new knowledge about the artistic phenomena of the 20th century through the critical-analytical potential of digital humanities, i.e. the application of digital technology in the processing, analysis and interpretation of artistic materials and the examination of the epistemological effects of its use within the field of art history. The project brings together five researchers from the Institute of Art History, including one PhD student, whose research areas are art history, art theory and the interdisciplinary field of science and art. Through the use of digital tools and testing their applicability in the analysis and interpretation of material, the research team will cover a wide range of topics within the cultural and artistic production of the 20th century: historical avant-garde; architectural competitions; exhibitions and international cultural exchange; artistic system of the period of transition; monuments and heritage production. Apart from archival and field research, the researchers will apply and test digital art history research methods, focusing on network, textual and spatial data analysis.

In addition to creating new knowledge about artistic phenomena of the 20th century, this project's goal is to consolidate, upgrade, and sustain existing digital tools and operative systems (CAN_IS) in order to technologically modernize and strengthen the Institute's research potential. The project aims to enhance interdisciplinarity, reinforce the potential of younger researchers through training and external mobility, and establish cooperation with domestic and foreign scientific institutions through international projects and collaboration on topics of common interest.
