“Discovering Dalmatia” in Dubrovnik’s Public Collections

As part of the Croatian Science Foundation project “Where East meets West”: Travel narratives and the fashioning of a Dalmatian artistic heritage in modern Europe (c. 1675 – c. 1941), project code IP-2022-10-8676, acronym TraveloguesDalmatia (28 December 2023 – 27 December 2027), a student workshop will be held at the University of Dubrovnik.

The workshop will involve undergraduate students from the programmes in Conservation-Restoration and the History of the Adriatic and the Mediterranean. On 25 April 2025, participants will explore travel literature collections featuring illustrations of Dalmatia, as well as the collection of Dalmatian drawings by Anton Perko housed in the Dubrovnik Research Library. They will also visit prints and paintings depicting Dalmatian themes from the 19th and 20th centuries preserved in the Dubrovnik Museums along with works by foreign artists inspired by Dalmatian landscapes, held by the Museum of Modern Art Dubrovnik.

Following these visits, the students will take part in a discussion session at the University of Dubrovnik Campus, reflecting on the artworks and visual material they encountered.

The workshop is led and organised by Professor Dr Sanja Žaja Vrbica, a member of the TraveloguesDalmatia research team. The mentoring team also includes Dr Rozana Vojvoda, museum advisor; Lucija Vuković, senior curator; Paula Raguž, head of the Dubrovnik Research Library; and Dr Ana Šverko, principal investigator of the TraveloguesDalmatia project.
