Adaptive reuse
On Monday, October 6, 2025, at 6 PM, in the premises of Zagreb Architects’ Association / Croatian Architects’ Association (Trg bana J. Jelačića 3/1, Zagreb), a promotion of the new bilingual issue of the journal Čovjek i prostor (ČIP/ Man and Space), titled Adaptive Reuse, will take place, accompanied by a lecture by the Belgian office noAarchitecten.
The new thematic issue, launched in 2024, gathers original essays by both local and international authors, focusing on criticism and reflection on spatial and social phenomena. The theme of the current edition is adaptive reuse in architecture and urbanism, explored through theory and practice, history and contemporaneity, from design methodologies to concrete spatial transformations.
The authors featured are: Kázmér Kovács, Maruša Zorec, Leon Husnjak, Jana Horvat, Elena Fontanella, Bie Plevoets and Koenraad Van Cleempoel, Tomislav Petrinec, Alan Braun, Daniela Calciu, Vjekoslav Gašparović, Damir Gamulin and Antun Sevšek, and Ana Šverko. The issue also includes a transcript of a conversation held in May 2024 as part of GIOskop program, addressing contemporary interventions in inherited spaces.
The thematic issue will be presented by issue editors Toma Plejić and Ana Šverko, designer Petra Milički, and Roman Šilje and Maja Furlan Zimmermann, under whose mandates ČiP acquired its current format. The discussion will be moderated by Frano Petar Zovko, director of UHA’s program.
From the outset, Ana Šverko and Frano Petar Zovko have been involved in the journal’s development as a quarterly publication: Šverko as a member and now head of the Publishing Board, and Zovko as an editorial board member who occasionally assumes the role of editor in new ČIP issues.
After the discussion, Belgian architect Philippe Viérin will present the work of his office noAarchitecten, including the project for the adaptive reuse of the Hasselt prison into a Faculty of Law, which is featured in the new issue of ČIP.
